Prof Nericcio,
Here is the information you asked for about financial aid for London:

Go to www.fasfa.gov this is the online application for federal student aid. This is the standard form used to apply for both federal loans and grants. (loans you pay back, grants are free)

Now in order to complete this form online, the student will need a Pin Number which has to be obtained from a different website: www.pin.ed.gov just follow the prompts and the student will be sent her/his pin number in a few days via email.

Once they have their pin number they can begin to fill out the FAFSA by following the prompts.

It was suggested to me to request funds for the 2002-03 school year, putting the summer program at the end of the school year rather than the beginning of 2003-04.

One piece of info they will need is SDSU's Federal School Code which is 001151

Once the form is complete, it will take a few weeks for it to be processed and then the file will be reviewed (student may be asked to submit documents of tax verification) and then the money will be disbursed.

Since the process takes time, I suggest filing as soon as possible to be sure of getting the money in time. I am still in the middle of all this and will be sure to inform you of any kinks/problems I come across. Also, if anyone is too confused, I found the Financial Aid office on the third floor of Student Services to be very helpful.

Thanks for all your help in filling me in about the meeting.
Talk to you soon.

Aloha,
-angela

Professor Nericcio- I just had a few more questions about the London trip before I turn in my $100 this week. How are things shaping up? How many people are turning in deposits.

pretty good; SEVEN people have turned in their deposits--with 8 to 13 more, I can guarantee that FIE and SDSU will back and RUN this programme, as the brits spell it.
1. For our living arangements, is there a place to store/cook food (microwave, refrigerator) if we decided to get our food at the grocery store?

I do believe that the FOUNDATION housing sites are equipped for this; I know that when I was over last year, our students had great dinner parties--fantastic socializing and a cheaper way to eat in merry old expensive LONDON!
2. When is the last day that we can get our $100 deposit back if we find that we are not able to go?

That's a good question; I imagine sometime in APRIL.
3. When will the $4,700 be due? Will it all be due at one time?

The foundation has not given me a response to this; they want to see if our program makes--I imagine sometime in April or early May.
4. If we get our plane tickets as a group, will we be leaving June 22? Or would we be leaving a little before then?

The group would leave a couple of days prior to the beginning of the program date.

5. Is the British Life and Culture class included in the 6 unit max., or is that in addition to the 6 unit max.?

There is no real MAX on units; you could conceivably take 9, my English Lit, Film and Theatre class,  a Special Study tied to your Internship and the British Life and Culture class.  But that might be a TAD too much for 8 weeks--but YOU make the final call, not me
Q:
I am an English major and I would really appreciate
it if you can try and work this out but I also have
other problems.  Like I don't have a passport yet and
it would be difficult to get one before the
application deadline.  Sorry but I've never traveled
anywhere in my life.  So I don't want you to go
through the trouble if I can't even get a  passport in
time.

A:
you don't need the passport yet; it is still VERY
early, VERY early!

the $100 deposit is only to get the trip
to run with FIE; if we don't get enough
deposits, the program will not run.

so relax and take all the time you
need to make a decision

Hi Nericcio,

I am flirting with the idea of going back to London (but this time around I don't think my grandma will help me out financially).  A couple concerns, aside from the price:

I will (hopefully!) be going to SDSU for grad school, but I don't graduate until May.  And I don't know if by June 22nd I will be eligible to take graduate level classes.  Also, I already took the British life and culture course through my previous semester abroad.  Basically, I am asking you if I will be able to earn some graduate credits and avoid taking classes I already have taken.

Also, will there be time to travel around a bit?  Are classes 4 or 5 days a week?  What's the best way to get more info about financial aid?  And does an internship automatically come with the program, or do we have to figure that stuff out ourselves?

ABSOLUTELY, you could do an English 798 Special Study with me; and then also do a film or theatre or publishing internship and recieve an E796 intern 3 units credits; england and SIX grad units--cool?!

Probably three days a week if I can convince the foundation to allow for travel; I am finding out about financial aid as we speak....   internships are set up by FIE on the basis of your application!  for now, fill it out with the 100buck check to hold your place and more specific answers will come in early december--the 100 bucks is TOTALLY refundable!!!!!!

Hi Professor,
I am very excited to hear that the trip to London is on.  I am extremely interested in going.  I've already gotten the greenlight from the parents for the whole financial situation so now I just have a few simple questions that hopefully you can answer for me.  Here it goes:
1. Do I need to already have a passport?

no, not right now, but I would apply for one before the new year!

2. Will we be living in Dorms or with families

residence halls in the heart of KENSINGTON in London
http://www.fie.org.uk/build.php?mid=107
3. Will there be problems registering for our classes for the fall?

regline is regline--the worst thing might be that it is an international call; but can't your register online these days?
