Sigma Tau Delta

Membership Information

Students with a major or minor in English and a minimum GPA of 3.3 are eligible for admission into Sigma Tau Delta.

Membership applications for the national Sigma Tau Delta honors society are accepted at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester. A national membership means that you can claim this honors society on your graduate and job applications; you will be eligible for special scholarships and awards; you can participate in the national conference; you will receive special recognition at the English Department commencement ceremony; and you will receive a national honors certificate and pin. Both official members and nonmembers are welcome to participate in all local chapter events, however, which are run by the student-centered part of the organization.

Our office processes applications twice a year. For acceptance Fall semester, please submit your application by September 30. For Spring admission, applications are due March 30.

Please note: if you want to be eligible for national scholarships or awards or the national Sigma Tau Delta Conference, you must have your application submitted by September 30 of that academic year. We will hold your checks and information until processing time.

Once processed, memberships cannot be refunded.

Applications should include:

  • An initiation fee of $37 (U.S.); make checks to the Faculty Advisor (Michael Borgstrom)
  • A transcript showing a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher
  • A membership form containing the information listed below

Use a word processor (Times New Roman [12pt] or Courier [10 cpi] font) to provide, on a separate sheet, the information requested below. You may print or download this page to use as an example while typing your information. Handwritten forms cannot be processed.

For each new member, list the following information:

  1. Name (provide names exactly as they should appear on membership certificates)
  2. Social security number
  3. Home address (permanent, not campus)
  4. E-mail
  5. Anticipated year of graduation
  6. Class rank (undergraduate student, graduate student, or faculty).
