Stephen Potts, PhD

Stephen Potts received his PhD at UC Berkeley in 1981, after which he spent a year teaching as a Fulbright Fellow in Germany. Since 1982 he has published numerous monographs, academic articles, editorial columns, and short stories. His study of the Russian writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky won the 1992 J. Lloyd Eaton Award for best work of criticism. His most recent publications (2009) are “Beginning at the End,” an excerpt of his novel in progress Boom Dreams, and “A Tale of Two Cultures: Science Studies and Science Fiction.” Currently he is revising his 1993 book on F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Price of Paradise, for a new edition to be published by the University of South Carolina Press. He has appeared on radio and TV—for example, in the 2002 Bravo program Page to Screen: The Lord of the Rings. Besides teaching at SDSU, he is a lecturer at UCSD, where he has won two teaching awards. When he can find the time, he enjoys hiking and camping.
